- "Once he was a hero; then he became a monster. A force of nature, untamable, unpredictable and deadly beyond belief. His rage is liable to devastate this world and every adjoining shadowrealm... and then either some humani hero or warrior Elder will be forced to destroy him utterly. At least in the catacombs, I know where he is and I know he is safe."
- — Bastet on Mars Ultor
Mars the Sleeping God, Huitzilopochtli the Champion, or Mars Ultor the Avenger (Greek: Ares, Siblings/Egyptian: Horus, Babylonian: Nergal), is an Elder of military might and the ultimate strategist who never lost a battle, the younger brother of Hekate and Bastet, the brother-in-arms of Prometheus and the husband of Zephaniah the Witch of Endor. At an unknown time, he has vampiric traits. He Awakens the Gold of the Twins of Legend four days before his death.
History[]
Huitzilopochtli (Mars) was born in the De Danann Empire to the Elders Perses and Asteria, and could conduct the Awakening. He was the younger brother of Bastet, Hekate and others. He was cousins to Odin. He was married to Zephaniah, and after the Fall, father to the Next Generation twin sons Romulus and Remus. He became the brother-in-law to Amenhotep, Bastet's husband, and to Prometheus, Zephaniah's brother. He was the uncle of Aten, Anubis, The Crow Goddess, via Odin---Hel and of the First People via Prometheus, Tsagaglalal and Gilgamesh. He was a relative to Abraham through the latter's marriage to Tsagaglalal.
On the Fall of Danu Talis, one of the greatest Elders Huitzilopochtli stayed to the very end and led thousands of humani slaves to away. He was one of the last off the island. After the Fall, Huitzilopochtli, still a noble warrior at the time, led the humani to safety, protecting and caring for them along the way as Huitzilopotchli the Champion of Humankind. Then to the Babylonians he went by Nergal, followed by Ares of the Greeks and finally Mars Ultor of the Romans. He was known to the Egyptians as Horus.
Thousands of years before the year of the Twins of Legend, he was the last to drive back Coatlicue from harming the Shadowrealms before Aoife's success.
Mars discovered Excalibur in an abandoned temple on a deserted island. The Sword of Ice led him to the Sword of Fire, Clarent. Somewhere along the line something happened to Mars. It is said that Clarent, the Coward's Blade, poisoned him. Mars later admits Clarent poisoned and changed him just like the Gold. And then, shortly after he Awakened his twin sons Romulus and Remus, they killed each other, pushing him over the edge. He transformed from a defender of humani to the vampiric Mars Ultor, the Avenger, a Dark Elder and one of the most feared men who enslaved and sacrificed the humani. He was also a warlock, waerloga in Danu Talis or "oathbreaker". As proclaimed by the Firelod, Mars's betrayal of humani induced Prometheus to seek restitution on him. Mars was chased across the world and through the Shadowrealms by the Firelord until one day he disappeared from his sealed location. Centuries later, it was revealed to had been secreted away by Prometheus's sister and Mars's wife, Zephaniah, to wall against her brother's vengeance.
As the Avenger, he demanded a blood sacrifice from the Romans for a time, harvesting the power of his enslaved humani's auras, and the leftover sparks of their creator Prometheus's aura. The cause for the bloodshed remained untold.
His wife, the Witch of Endor, cursed him in his madness and encased him in his own aura. His brother-in-law Prometheus assisted her. Mars' purple-red aura hardened like cooled down lava. Mars was trapped underground in the Roman land that would later become the foundation of Paris. This underground chamber was in the catacombs of Paris. Lying in a big circular room on a stone plinth. His servants Phobos and Deimos (the guardians of Mars Ultor also, one gorges itself by fear and the other delighted by panic) protected and served him. Sometimes during his life he was declared an Utlaga, a wolf's head. He is also the uncle of Hel and the cousin of Odin.
Appearance[]
In Zephaniah's memories, Mars was a lone warrior in metal and leather armor, wielding a sword almost as tall as he, fighting off dinosaur-like creatures on a burning battlefield. He was a warrior in metal and leather standing alone at an ancient city's gate against a vast horde of apelike beast-men while a column of refugees escape though another gate. He was a warrior in red and gold armor, but later the polished leather and metal armor had turned filthy, encrusted with mud, streaked and stained alongside the changed man.
On Danu Talis, Mars was a tall, handsome man standing alone on the top of a dizzyingly high stepped pyramid, arms raised to the heavens. Across his shoulders he wore a spectacular cloak of multicolored feathers. When he encountered the time traveling Scathach, Huitzilopochtli was tall and broad, completely clad in black glass and metal armor, bright blue eyes blazing beneath an ornate helmet.
As a statue in the Catacombs of Paris, Mars was a huge stature of a man in ancient-looking metal and leather armor, gauntleted hands wrapped around the thick hilt of broadsword that was at least six feet long. The stature's head was covered in a helmet that completely concealed the face. Within the helmet, two eyes blazed bloodred. There was a thick hard gray crust over his skin and clothing. The one touch of color about the god was in his eyes, which glowed red with drifting red smoke behind a full-face visor that completely concealed his face. Once he tries to bubble out his aura, the curse would make it struck to his flesh, quickly cooling and coating the flesh in a gray-white stonelike scab.
When temporarily freed, his fingertips revealed deeply tanned, muscled flesh beneath with healthy skin. Overall, his statue form could still cry wet tears. Rocks snapped and creaked as the god stood. He was at least seven feet tall, his helmeted head almost brushing the ceiling. He held the broadsword in his left hand while he Awakened Josh Newman. His huge sword's edge was chipped and pitted and there was the faintest trace of a spiraling pattern down the center of the sword.
When angry or using his aura, his bright blue eyes changed to burnt-red, crimson. He had a coal-black forked tongue and his mouth was filled with huge incisors that curled like savage vampire fangs.
When imprisoned in bones by John Dee, he was a gray statue partially encased in yellow. It depicted an enormous man on hands and knees, caught as he attempted to climb to his feet. The figure was dressed as a warrior, wearing the metal and leather armor of the ancient past, his left arm outstretched, fingers splayed wide, with his right arm was buried in the floor up to his wrist. His body from the waist down also disappeared into the ground. On the figure's back, two hideous child-sized creatures had been frozen as they'd attempted to leap forward on goatlike hooves. They were satyrs Phobos and Deimos on the back of Mars Ultor.
After Zephaniah frees him from his bone prison, Mars Ultor's centuries of of encrusted and hardened aura had fallen to dust around his feet, stripping him of much of his huge bulk, taking inches off his height. Beneath the shell, he'd been horrified to discover that his once-muscular body was flabby and soft, and his legs in particular felt weak, barely able to support his weight. His broadsword was also lost, instead he used a sharp metal short sword.
The unsealed Mars was described by humans as a large, bulky tanned man. He was huge, and looked even bigger because of his overlarge clothes: blue jeans and a loose T-shirt that might once have been white but was now an indefinable shade of gray, worn under an enormous metal-studded black leather motorcycle jacket. The silver metal studs on the back of his jacket picked out a war helmet similar in design to his belt buckle: one red and one blue stud made eyes peering out from either side of the long nose guard. A black and white bandana was tied tightly across his head and knotted as the back of his skull and his eyes were hidden behind aviator-style Ray-Bans sunglasses.
His constant battles with the creatures in Alcatraz shredded his black leather jacket.
At death to awaken Areop-Enap and distract Karkinos, his aura blazed brighter and brighter, bloodred armor flowing over his body and a metal helm appearing on his head, turning him into the ferocious warrior of legend. Sticky streamers of light blazed off his body. Mars lowered his sword, then sheathed it. As his aura was dying, the Elder's odor became bitter and sour.
Personality[]
The Lord of War is a courageous warrior, professional soldier and the ultimate strategist who fought, won and survived many battles for his comrades and the humani until his painful confinement at his wife and brother-in-law's hands. By the time he became the Avenger, he was one of the most hated and feared men on Earth.
For the evacuation of Danu Talis, Huitzilopochtli worked with Aten, Abraham, Prometheus and his sister Hekate to prepare for a future where Elders and humani lived together long ago. Of course, Abraham and Marethyu shown them countless futures if the right thing to free humani was/not possible.
Mars was devoted to Zephaniah, even if he was angry and feared her. After being unsealed by her, he prioritized vengeance on Chronos who took his wife's eyes and not on his wife who sealed him underground for thousands of years. He was brother-in-arms with Prometheus since the era of Danu Talis, only wishing to wound him out of spite years later for assisting his imprisonment. He hates Clarent for contributing to his failure in life. He habitually calls his adoptive niece "Mistress" Tsagaglalal and is use to having his ear twisted by her when she is angry, even being obedient afterwards just like Prometheus. Based on the fact he was Nergal, he guarded over his adoptive nephew Gilgamesh from afar.
To the Gold twin of the Prophecy, Mars supports Josh Newman and hopes for his survival.
Due to imprisonment, he once believed transportation was by chariot. He drinks lemonade. He is disgusted with Nereus and due to the bones prison, seeks to kill John Dee.

Because of his major, he also disdains Niten's Book of the Five Rings. He also indirectly arranges John Dee to fail and become an Utlaga. For victory of hi side, he sacrifices himself to buy time.
The Magician[]
In The Magician, Dee and Machiavelli convince Josh to follow them to the catacombs of Paris to have Mars Ultor, entombed in the depths of the tunnels, to Awaken his powers. Mars accepts but states that Josh is indebted to him. Seeing the strength of his golden aura, Mars decides to give Josh a gift, which turns out to be his military knowledge. Nicholas Flamel, Sophie Newman, Joan of Arc and the Comte de Saint-Germain arrive to see that Josh has been Awakened, and Mars attempts to convince Sophie to free him from his solidified aura using the Witch of Endor’s knowledge, but she refuses. Also, it is stated that he is the father of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome. He said that his sons were first the closest friends but the power changed them as their hate, fear and other emotions were also heightened by the Awakening process, and Romulus killed Remus. Afterward, as everyone else evacuated, Dr. John Dee encased Mars Ultor and his satyr guardians, Phobos and Deimos, in hardened bone.
The Necromancer[]
In The Necromancer, Mars successfully enthralls his Awakened, Josh, from the other side of the world. He places the Gold into a pseudo-dream and makes him self-travel by a stolen car to the Magician's door step in San Fransisco from Hades. However, the Sleeping God does not know the Magician sought the Twin of Gold for the evocation of the dangerous Archon Coatlicue, a powerful enemy thwarted by Huitzilopochtli long ago.
The Sorceress[]
After his bone entombment, the Dark Elder Mars is revisited earlier in The Sorceress by the Magician to help the latter find the Twins through Mars's connection with the Gold twin. He secretly contacts his older sister, the cat goddess, earlier on Monday 4th, June the same day just to have her assist the Magician. He also learns the Magician killed the beloved sister Hekate.
Bastet reveals to the immortal Dr. John Dee that Mars Ultor he is her younger brother. She calls him by the name Horus. She states that Mars Ultor is dangerous beyond measure since he lost his heroic side. She also reveals Mars's seal was Zephaniah's deep love to protect him. By Mars's distant strategy, her indirect result will bring the Magician to become an Utlaga and hunted by all Dark Elders.
The Warlock[]
In The Warlock, Zephaniah freed him and ask him to kill Dr. John Dee. He joins the others at Tsagaglalal's home, where he receives a jade tablet. Then he reveals to Sophie that he has a connection to her twin that he gained from passing his knowledge to him, and that he knows Josh is on Alcatraz. He travels to Alcatraz along with Odin, Hel, and Black Hawk.
Once sent to San Fransisco, Mars, who searched for Tsagaglalal and Scott Street, was eyed as a bully target by greasy-haired youths Larry and Mo since the Esmiol Building and along Broadway. He punished them with physical fear and warned the pair he would not tolerate their attacks terrorizing the neighborhood.
The Enchantress[]
In The Enchantress, while on Alcatraz with Odin, Hel, Niccolo Machiavelli, Billy the Kid, and Black Hawk, many of the monsters are escaping. A giant crab comes out with three monokerata, Xolotl, and assorted other monsters. The Flamels, their Elders and Immortal allies prepare to face off the crab Karkinos. They realize that they have to open Areop-Enap's web coating. Billy and Black Hawk head out with the others to fight the giant crab. It eats Xolotl, which is described that since the crab has tasted Elder aura, he will be satisfied by nothing else. Odin distracts him by taking off his eyepatch and shooting a kind of laser out of his empty eye socket. Mars distracts the crab by flaring up his aura after Odin and Hel are destroyed because of the aura expenditure, but his aura consumes himself in spontaneous combustion, as it did to Odin and Hel. Mars's sacrifice awakes the Spider Goddess and Karkinos becomes her breakfast. Black Hawk is MIA while the Flamels with Billy and Machiavelli survive Alcatraz.
Mars appears on Danu Talis of the De Danann Empire as Huitzilopochtli with his sister Hekate when Prometheus brings Scathach's adventure party across the land and crashed their vimana on the Yggdrasill. Huitzilopochtli leads Hekate's People of the Tree to free the imprisoned Aten. The humani are led by Hekate and commanded by Huitzilopochtli in the Elders' civil war before the Fall of Danu Talis.
Enemies[]
- Bastet: She was distant from Mars, but both were courteously polite in front of Hekate. However, they completely severed ties when related their ideology towards the humani, mainly Mars seeking abolition and Bastet desiring slavery restored. He contacted her once earlier on Monday 4th, June when the Twins of Legend learned to be Masters of Water.
- Anubis: He is obedient to his mother Bastet and created the anpu. As an adversary to Aten, Mars's supported candidate during the De Danann Empire, he was not favored by his uncle and more so after the Fall with relation to the humani.
- Prometheus: Angry for assisting Zephaniah to form his statue imprisonment for thousands of years and tried to knife him upon meeting again in San Fransisco. In The Warlock, they make amends and later became brothers-in-arms again after reading Abraham the Mage's jade tablet.
- John Dee: Angered that he (John) trapped him (Mars Ultor) in a "prison of bone". It further evolved into hatred upon learning about the murder of his favorite sister Hekate. Mars sent his other sister Bastet to assist the Magician knowing full well his sister will cause Dee to fail and become an Utlaga.
Trivia[]

- Like his older sister Hekate who Awakened the elder sister the Silver, the baby brother Mars Awakened the younger brother the Gold.
- The Witch of Endor envied Mars's courage, but deep loved Mars by sealing him away and gradually decrease his Avenger madness with age.
- He is the namesake of both the planet (Mars) and the month of March, the Elder remembered by humani.

- It's unclear if Mars was affected by The Change, as it had already affected his sisters Hekate and Bastet, and Bastet's two sons by the fall of Danu Talis. His vampiric traits and insanity may have been a result of The Change, a distortion resulted from his continuous use of Clarent, or a relationship to his blood sacrifices.
- His given name possibilities:
- In The Sorceress, Bastet emphasizes that as Horus, he was her younger brother. It might be possible that Horus was his given name, as the Royal family of Danu Talis is largely represented as deities from Egyptian mythology.
- In The Enchantress, Mars Ultor reveals before death to go by the name Huitzilopochtli prior to the Fall of Danu Talis, and doesn't recognize his more commonly used name when it's used. It's possible that Huitzilopotchli is his given name.
