As a long time fan of SOINF, it saddens me to see the wiki in such a sorry state. I'm willing to help, but also to make some changes. With that in mind, I wish to ask: what are the requirements for promotion?
My knowledge of the first 4 books is almost complete, but I've sadly never had the chance to read 5th and 6th.
Well, if you're looking to help out by improving existing pages, this is an incomplete list of pages that need attention; you can choose the topics that you know the most about and work on those. I think the most important project right now is to improve the summaries for the books in the series.
In terms of promotion: You can do almost anything on this wiki with your current user level. I think the only major things you can't do are delete pages and edit the rights of other users. If you need to do either of those things, just let me know and I can do them for you. If you make regular contributions to the wiki, then I'd be more than happy to grant you additional powers if you think you need them!
I am aware that the Wiki is a little rough in patches; that's partly because it's been a while since the author has added to the series. Every few months the passion to improve the Wiki strikes me and I'll make a few hundred edits before hibernating again. But if you leave messages as you have done here, I will usually reply within 24h.
Hi, sorry for the unreasonably long reply time. I was working about 50h for the last few weeks and had some major computer trouble.
Well, two reasons; 1) I was in the middle of final exams and sort of lost my mind while looking for stuff to do that wasn't studying, and 2) I thought it might be useful to have something on the front page along the lines of "Want to help the wiki? Check out our lists of pages that need to be improved!".
The idea was:
Level 1: Really important pages that need major work. For example, the page on The Enchantress is one of the most important on our wiki, but doesn't have any of the information it needs.
Level 2: A fairly important page that needs to be restructured or revamped. For example, the page on Archons.
Level 3: Medium to low traffic pages that need a reasonable amount of editing.
Level 4: Low priority, but needs to be brushed up. Maybe the article is short, or needs one or two more details.
In retrospect, devising that whole system wasn't a good use of time, and kind of looks like spam. As I said I was kind of losing my mind, but the system could be an okay place to start in terms of letting people know what needs work.
Anyway, I'll be back on the Wiki a lot more again; the last month wasn't brilliant.
That's not really the intended function of "adopt a wiki" - "adopt a wiki" is intended for wikis where all administrators have been entirely absent for at least two months.
That said, if you need to be able to use administrator powers, I'm happy to give them to you as long as you actually need them to get a bunch of stuff done. If there are only a few minor things you need done, just let me know. Another thing I might be able to do is change what powers are available to all non-admin users.
One of the admins say that since you apparently didn't have bureaucrat rights, I would need you to inform you that I was requesting to adopt the wiki. I do need them to get a bunch of stuff done. You're not exactly here a lot and the wiki desperately needs to be cleaned up and the wiki, and you, need all the help it can get. What powers are available anyways?
I did hear about "bureaucrat privileges” when I went through the adopt-a-Wiki process myself (though I totally forgot that I didn't have them). Bureaucrats are one step up from admins; only a bureaucrat can make you or me an admin or a full-fledged bureaucrat. Since I was never given these, I'm actually unable to give you any new powers – we'll have to wait for adopt-a-wiki to do give them to you our me. (Unless one of our long-lost bureaucrats comes back from the dead; Bigbrologan has been gone since 2009, and Cörey hasn't been seen since early 2016.)
Re:Admin privileges; admin privileges are useful for a bunch of stuff. You can delete pages, and gain the ability to change edit protection on pages. (I've had to de-protect a number of pages that were edit-proof before; I thought I fixed them all but last week I found two I missed. The only important page that is still protected is the front page.)
The most important tool available to admins is the admin dashboard. The dashboard lets you look at the structure of the wiki (category structures, lists of pages, lists of specific wiki-content, etc). I know it looks like I have been inactive (and I admit I was AWOL for a long while earlier this year), but I have also been doing a lot of stuff behind-the-scenes. (You can look here for proof)
Anyway, you're absolutely right; this wiki does need all the help it can get. I just wanted to make sure you had a use for admin powers (I do apologize if this came off as being overprotective). Unfortunately it turns out I don't have the power to give them to you, but you have my full support for obtaining them!
One last thing; I'm currently working on a new category system for the whole Wiki. If you see a maelstrom of editing in the next week or so, that's what that is.
Hi, sorry for the absurdly long response time. It could be, but it's (in my view) better to discuss the important Elders on the Elders page, and link to the wiki-created Category:Elders page. If you disagree, let me know why; I'm happy to change that! :)
^What was wrong with it to begin with anyways to cause it to be deleted? I do feel that the List of Elders page had info on the different Elders that was pretty helpful/useful and if the list has a list of all the Elders while the Elders list is missing a couple Elders. Plus, if the Elders list got any longer, the Elders page would take forever to go through.
I suppose, I just felt it could go on the main page as a section and say at the top "For a complete list of elders, see Category:Elders". It didn't seem to me like the content needed its own page - maybe I should compare how Wikipedia.org does their list pages and figure something out.
^But the only the List of Elders page has the complete list of Elders though, the Elders cat only has all of the Elders with pages. Also, if it isn't too much trouble, could you delete all the pages that are candidates for deletion.
Also, could you get rid of all the extra pictures, any picture that is on the same page as another. For example, the other images on the Fire magic, Nereids and etc. The wiki doesn't need that many of the same pictures of the same thing, one is enough.
My hope is that all the elders will be listed on the "Elders" page, along with a short description (which would sort of act like a list). If you want though, you can rebuild the "List of Elders" page and leave it at that if it looks good. Ideally I'd also like to make a page for "Dark Elders", and work on the "Next Generation" information/page.
Re:Candidates for deletion; yeah, I've deleted several of them, I'll finish the job.
Re:pictures; I did go through and get rid of something like 100 (seriously), but properly dealing with them is on my to-do list. I'd also like to give them useful names, and (if I have the time) see whether we should legally be using them.
The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel wiki was included in the now-retired Book wiki footer. A new fantasy literature footer has been created, and I was wondering if I could place it on the main page, since this site meets all the new requirements for inclusion.
I was wonderign if you can give me any inof on teh picture of Black Annis on the page The Secrets Of The Immortal Nicholas Flamel. Its bottom one shwign her in blue. I am lookign for the artist that drew her.
