Persephone was the daughter of the Greek goddess of the harvest, Demeter. When she was a young woman, the Greek god Hades wished for her as his bride, and stole her from Earth. In grief, Demeter inflicted the Earth with blight and nothing grew in her sorrow. Zeus went to Hades and demanded Persephone be returned. Hades agreed, as long as she had not eaten anything while in his realm. During their conversation, Persephone ate three seeds from a pomegranate. In triumph, Hades stated she would remain in his realm, and Demeter mourned once more. A compromise was then reached. Persephone would spend three months with Hades out of the year and the rest with Demeter.
Abilities[]
- Immortality: Persephone is Immortal and does not age. Though an immortal may be poisoned or slain in battle, they may live for thousands or millions of years.
In the Series[]
Persephone is briefly mentioned in the first book as an Elder who resides in North America. She supposedly possesses the power to Awaken individuals, but it is not recommended that anyone go near her, as she supposedly went insane from years spent in Hades’ Shadowrealm, Erebus.
Trivia and Theories[]
- Scathach mentions that she is surprised The Witch knows the locations of both Persephone and Black Annis and let them live, giving the impression that she dislikes both.
- A possible reason for Zephaniah's dislike of Persephone might involve Mars Ultor. To the Babylonians, Mars was called Nergal, and in Babylonian myth, Nergal's consort was the Goddess of the Underworld, Ereshkigal. How she became his consort differs, from deception to manipulation. If she is Ereshkigal, this would possibly make Inanna her sister. Contrasty, this might also make Inanna and Tammuz the Greek Gods Aphrodite and Adonis, as the story of Tammuz and Inanna mirrors Adonis and Aphrodite.
