Tulpas are humanoid constructs made of wax or a similar material. Tulpas can be created and controlled by skilled Magicians, and while they are not capable of conscious thought or executing free will, they are capable of obeying simple commands without continuous input. Unlike Golems, Tulpas can be created without placing a spell on or about the construct, and can hence be created and commanded at a distance.
In The Magician, Niccolo Machiavelli remotely creates a candlewax Tulpa inside the Notre Dame cathedral from the back seat of his car. Machiavelli uses the Tulpa to distract Nicholas Flamel, Scathach, and the Twins until he can arrive in person and attempt to detain the group.
